Blog Post 6: YouTube & Hulu

I have used both YouTube and Hulu in the past; however, it is usually for very different viewing reasons. I have only been to Hulu and handful of times and when I have it has always been to watch an episode of a TV show I haven’t seen. Most networks have their shows available to stream on their websites for free with “minimal commercial interruption.” This is much like what Hulu has going on except on Hulu you can find episodes of shows from different networks all in one place. Also, many networks will wait a few days before posting their shows, hoping that it will encourage strong fans to take the time to tune in to the live program. Hulu is known for posting most of the shows very quickly after they air.

Because Hulu is a joint venture of networks its use of copyrighted television shows is allowed without being considered appropriation or plagiarism. YouTube functions more like a blog but with videos instead of written posts. The content of the user-generated videos includes movie and TV clips, music videos, video-blogs, and short original videos. It’s a place to go and see funny homemade videos or interesting parodies that people have taken the time to put together. As we talked about in class, appropriated videos will be taken down after the lawsuit with Viacom, but the parodies that the site boasts come from all different skill levels and incorporate lots of different content. One that I would recommend viewing is the mash-up of Mean Girls and Disney Princesses: Mean Disney Girls @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQeTlxhhmEo it’s very impressive!
