Practicum #3- Brian Oliver

April 12th

Since I’ve changed my picture, my listenership has gone up. However, my picture wasn’t the only thing that I’ve changed over the past few days. I also changed my blipping strategy and schedule. Between this time and my last blog post, I began to blip music from a myriad of different genres and the number of times that I blipped songs throughout the day. If you refer to my first Practicum Post, I started out blipping like I was an actual DJ, and had my own radio show. So far I have a few “shows” on Wednesday nights, and each of these shows, showcased my favorite drummers, and my favorite songs that they perform. For example, I during these shows I would blip a song that showcases one of my favorite drummers like, “Lateralus,” by the band Tool for example. In the message that accompanies the blip, I would then say a little bit about the drummer that played on the track. For example, on the Tool blip I wrote, “Next is Danny Carey from Tool. He is super technical, yet does it tastefully in the music. The polyrhythm section in this song gives me goose bumps”.

I thought blipping as a show would be a good way to attract listeners, but after spending some time searching and looking at other blip members’ profiles, I have decided that maybe I needed to blip more often then just once a day. This has inspired me to start blipping multiple times throughout the day, on top of my Wednesday night radio show. Today, I blipped over 30 times from a myriad of different bands in everything from Paul Simon, Phil Collins, Tom Petty, to Nevermore and 30 Seconds to Mars. I’ve gained two new listeners so far, and decided this may be a way for me to get more listeners. People who have blipped multiple times throughout the day seem to have the most listeners from my research, so hopefully me blipping a lot will help get me some more.

I was talking to my friend who goes to Boston College on the phone the other day, and he told me one of his friends is into blip.fm. He gave me his DJ name, DJAdonis, and I looked at his profile, and realized that we had a lot of similar music tastes in Counting Crows and Weezer, so I gave him props on some of his songs “Lights Please” by J Cole, “Follow Us” by Big Boi, and others that I enjoyed. In doing this, I hope to receive some a new listener or props in return, and soon he became a listener.
