Practicum #3 – Daly W.

As I continue to investigate the various facets of Twitter I have slowly become more intrigued with the site. Although I continue to have frustrations with it (such as how it constantly tells me I have “1 new follower requests” when I have none, or “3 new follower requests” when I only have two), I have also become more interested with its ability to connect me to so many other people and sources around the globe.

I will be presenting on Twitter tomorrow afternoon in discussion and have come up with a few questions for you to consider (or comment on if you can’t be there) for the presentation. The last two questions will require a bit more though and hopefully we will be able to have a more focused discussion on them in section.
1) Do many of you participate in Twitter? Why or why not?
2) If you don’t have a Twitter, is there a specific reason you have chosen not to?
3) If you do have a Twitter, what is it that attracted you to this kind of social networking site?
4) In lecture, Liz discussed presentation of self through social networking sites. Do you think that Twitter has the same ability as MySpace and Facebook for people to shape the way they are perceived by others?
5) How do you think Andrew Keen feels about Twitter in relation to Web 2.0?

  1. I began using Twitter as a way to promote my music. At first I didn't understand how to use Twitter. It sort of frustrated me, and I didn't really understand the point when everyone has a FB anyways. After a little while I realized that the #hashtags were used to start trending topics, and as a way to connect with people. Once I figured that out it opened a whole new world to me! It was such an efficient way to quickly talk to people. Also, I think it's so cool that celebrities (most) tweet themselves and you can contact them through it. I used to go to NYT.com or other news sites but now I follow them on twitter, and look at the breaking news. I love that it is short, concise, and if I want to read further i can link to the cite to read the full article. It makes everything SO efficient!

I think that Twitter does have the ability that other social networking sites have to shape the way people are perceived by others. It is the same as posting a FB status basically. Except, if you use a #hashtag to participate in a trending topic, many more people are going to see the update, not just "friends" like on FB. It is also important to note the incredible impact Twitter has had on the revolution in Egypt. The fact that people could share videos and pictures through their mobile phones and the government could not hide what was really going on is incredible.
