Practicum #!
This is a little short notice, but today I will be presenting on social networking sites. I have joined three sites call Yelp, 43 Things and Pinterest. What scared me the most about this assignment was the idea of joining three sketchy social networking sites where multiple creepers would have the opportunity to gain access to my personal pictures or information. That's why I ended up on these websites. All three are social networking sites, but serve a greater purpose than simply trying to garner friends and/or compliments. Assuming most of you are on facebook already, the question I would like to pose is what is it that may prevent you from joining another social networking site online? What is it that you look for in joining another online community? Looking forward to sharing my experiences with you!

After the past week of lecture and readings, it seems as both had a very relaxed attitude towards identities/personal information online. Maybe I am simply feeding into the dominant discourse or a moral panic but I am extremely nervous and careful about putting any information online.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago I had had several issues with credit card theft due to online shopping. Although, that has not happened in a while. Maybe the security of sites has been improved. However, I have heard plenty of people getting their complete identities stolen online form credit card numbers, to social security numbers, and having it nearly ruin their lives.
I felt as if in lecture and in the readings the attitude towards putting information online was that people really blew the dangers of it out of proportion and that it was basically like completing transactions in person, but people were scared because it is the unknown. I do agree that people are nervous about the unknown but it is really UNKNOWN. There are plenty of hackers skilled enough to steal information and use it to harm you.
I mean honestly I would be thinking the same thing you just said. I would not want to take part in any social networking websites that I am not fully comfortable with. I really haven't heard of any of the three you just listed and would be nervous for others to look at my pictures and information as you just said. I think the online world is so interesting to learn about but can be very scary too. I have heard to many stories of girls meeting men online and it turning into a horror story. Of course I am assuming the worst right now, but I just wouldn't take this risk. I was late to join facebook and am currently doing my practicum project on second life and I don't really like being apart of it. Sorry I will not be able to make it to your presentation but good luck!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would join another online community currently because facebook is all that I need right now. If I do add one, I will add linkedin to help with applying to jobs and getting my name out there. I don't have anything against the other sites but I don't see a reason to join another when I am happy on facebook and twitter currently!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way as Samantha. I'm on facebook and I already feel like I'm there way too often, but as far as joining the other sites, I also feel like I would have less control over them. On facebook, I don't allow anyone to see my pictures - not even my friends. This is basically because, like most people, there are some things that future employers don't need to be made aware of.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to join another community I would also join Linkedin or Monster or something that would help me get a job. Sorry I can't make it either but good luck!
