Practicum - Jamie (Blog #3: Tween/Kid Audiences)

Recently I have been doing some basic research on the tween audience demographic and their online activities. The tween demographic falls between the ages of 8 and 12. They are also known as the "Internet users in training" and "the Internet explorers." Tweens are at an age where they are beginning to engage in online activities with peers and others. According to many sites that I've gone to, children under age 12 tend to go to websites of their favorite television shows: NickJr, CartoonNetwork, Disney, etc. Also very popular with kids this age are online game sites and video streaming/downloading websites.

It is said that tweens spend 1.5-2 hours each day surfing the Internet. Also, according to article "Connect with Kids Online,"

there will be an increase of 25.7 million tween Internet users by 2015. Today, there are 20.2 million tween Internet users. It's not surprising, but I find it interesting that the numbers of tween Internet users are rapidly increasing each year. Kids of the newer generation are becoming more and more "digital" and "high tech," being so young, but already aware and highly engaged with the Internet. It'd be interesting to see what this generation of kids bring in the future.
