Practicum - Jamie (Blog #4: Tween/Kid Audiences)
I mentioned before in my previous blog post that tweens like going online to network channel websites that host their favorite TV shows. One of the websites I surfed through was NickJr. However, I found that this particular site was geared towards an even younger audience.
But as I was surfing through the website, I was able to find another website that was geared more towards tweens, "Nick." I thought it was a clever idea for Nickelodeon to make separate websites for each audience they are trying to attract. So within NickJr, younger kids were allowed to watch shows such as "Dora the Explorer," "Blues Clues," and "Diego," while tweens went to Nick for shows like "iCarly," "Spongebob," and "PowerRangers Samurai." On the other hand, on the teen site, TeenNick, a more complex and mature list of shows are represented ("That 70's Show," "Zoey 101," and "Malcolm in the Middle").
Throughout my research I found it interesting how different the layout of NickJr and Nick websites were. With a site more geared towards older kids like Nick, there is more variety and choices to choose from. Within the site, tweens can engage in playing games, watching videos, listening to music, and posting messages on the message board relevant to the TV show or th
e network itself. It gets even greater with the teen site; the profile image can be more personalized, there is a section designated to connecting to other social networking services (facebook and twitter), and there is a section designated for blogging which all are not included in the younger sites. These websites have the same function in gathering members to visit the site for more access to favorite TV shows, but they each are laid out differently according to the target audience.
