practicum- Kayla #2

While blogging on the Glee site, I've repeatedly had the feeling that conversation was constrained because of a need for civility. The Glee television show promotes acceptance but also handles sensitive issues. I thought that these sensitive topics would have sparked more debate.

The particular discussion board I'm on is officially sponsored by Fox. This could also alter topic discussion and restriction. Because Fox is a broadcast network and its audience ranges, there could be varying demographics of people on the discussion wanting to talk about Glee.

I don't want to be a troll of any sorts but I would like to see more debate regarding the issues on the forum. In order to spark something up I may attempt to unpack dominant discourses to challenge thought on the forum.

  1. I think that you're right to question if it might be the Fox sponsorship that impacts the content of the Glee site, however, the show manages to bring up important issues without making them into a big deal. I remember when the show was focusing on Kurt being bullied and threatened Karofsky, I was really impressed with the setup of the situation and some of the advice they had Blaine giving to Kurt, but then I thought they could have gone even further with the episode and was disappointed by the lack of follow through. A few episodes after Kurt transferred school, the jock-bully was back at the main high school with no real reason or explanation for his return.

I hope you’re able to respectfully stir the pot a little on that discussion board. It would be interesting to see if you could get people to maintain a respectful debate about important issues over the internet. Sometimes the lack of face-to-face interaction that the internet provides can give people the courage to say things they might not otherwise say in a live debate/discussion. Good luck!
