On Youtube I watched a video of a girl singing a cover of Adele’s song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6d5cSvwS1UY&feature=relatedvideo of a girl
On Hulu I watched a show called Parenthood, originally aired on NBC: http://www.hulu.com/watch/229600/parenthood-new-plan
Youtube is distinctive in that it was the first source of user-generated video content. Exemplified in lecture, anyone from two aspiring directors, like in Lonely Girl, or a random guy, like in Chocolate Rain. Youtube has become a locale for aspiring “stars” to be discovered. It’s success comes from participation. Most of the home-made videos are average, to low quality.
In my opinion, there are 3 main differences between youtube and Hulu:
- User generated content vs. premium content
- Quality and Revenue
- Accessibility
Youtube’s videos are uploaded by users while Hulu’s videos are from studio’s or networks. Thus, the quality of the video is drastically difference. I experienced this while watching the videos on the sites. The Youtube video was slightly fuzzy, very home-made. On Hulu I watched Parenthood in near perfect video quality. More recently, Youtube has started adding HD video and in-video captioning to try and compete. The quality of these videos are much better. Yet, Hulu has commercial breaks between shows and Youtube does not. This plays into the revenue of the sites. Hulu’s revenue is much higher than Youtube’s annually. Additionally, Youtube is accessible nearly everywhere in the world, while Hulu is only in the U.S.
Youtube is a place for participation and user-generated content. People post videos of their talents and their lives or other people’s talent/lives. Hulu is a place to watch television shows. Just as I did for this blog, I watch people’s music videos on Youtube as well as movie trailers and user-generated videos. Hulu viewers watch TV shows and movies such as “Family Guy” and “Saturday Night Live”. Both are great but are good for different things!
