Blog Post #6 - YouTube/Hulu

I’ve used both Hulu and YouTube to a large extent over the past few years. However, I still sat down and watched a show or two on each just to jog my memory a bit. On YouTube, I chose to watch an episode produced by the popular user “Smosh.” If you aren’t already familiar them, they’ve been producing comical webisodes for a few years now, and I used to watch them a lot in middle school. On Hulu, I chose to watch the latest episode of “The Office.”
Personally, I use each of these sites with specific goals in mind. I go to YouTube for more amateur material, more unique or niche material, etc. YouTube is such a popular and widely used site, that browsers can find almost anything there. If I want to fix my Xbox, I can watch a video on that. If I want to do a photoshop tutorial, I can do that. The videos on YouTube have more of an elementary feel and professionalism in a kid’s sense. The products are user created, anybody can do it. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s Hulu. I love Hulu, I couldn’t go without it. The cable at my apartment sucks, and between that and class I often miss my favorite shows, like The Office. Hulu features television programs and feature length movies for free online, or at least whatever the broadcast companies are willing to release. It’s the perfect way for me to stay hooked on my shows. It has more of an adult feel to it as well, which I like. In comparison, both sites feature advertisements. Most of the Youtube videos are shorter, and just feature 10 or 15 second advertisements before the occasional video. I get annoyed by these if I’m watching numerous videos on YouTube. Hulu, however, simply plays one or two long advertisements, usually lapsing around a minute, before the feature length show. I like this, because it allows me enough time to run into the kitchen, grab a snack, and sit back down to enjoy the show. I don’t even watch the advertisements int he beginning, and then there aren’t any during the show, fantastic! In recent years, they’ve competed quality wise, but now they are basically equal, both offering HD on certain videos. Both allow you to create accounts and become more involved with your favorite shows and videos. I’ll continue to use both in the future.
