Spent some more time "mastering" the world of warcraft. the biggest news for the day is my joining a guild. I embarassingly havent figured out how to graduate from the instructional gnome world, but this guild is filled with newcomers to the game with similar question. Kindly people work out problems together. Im leveling up! So that exciting. I am presenting tomorrow so here is some food for thought: Has anyone ever played WoW before? MMORPGs? RPGs?How does this quest-based community differ from other online communities? See you tomorrow.
I haven't played WoW, but I think it'll probably be best to stay away from it. I think I'll easily get hooked onto it if I start. So it's probably best to stay away from it.
ReplyDeleteI don't play MMORPGs, but I have heard of some games since my brothers are online game addicts! Recently, they have been asking me to team up with them in the MMORPG "Conquer." I have rejected their offers many times, just because I know I don't have the time for it.
In discussion, you asked us if we have played any MMORPGs, but no one raised their hand. Well, after discussion today, I just realized that I have played and is currently playing a MMORPG game. I am playing Club Penguin for my practicum project, and that's a popular MMORPG game tweens play. Like WoW, you are given many 'quests' to complete.
How are quest-based community different from other online communities? As also mentioned in lecture, you are more engaged in the games with quests you get; unlike 2nd Life, you aren't given a clear mission to do much.
Nice presentation today Mike. I've heard of WoW and lost a few friends to it, but never played it myself. I'm glad you included a brief summary of the context in which the game is played as I really didn't have a clue.
ReplyDeleteI think RuneScape is an MMORPG, I used to play that in middle school. I remember getting very hooked on that, so I think I'm going to stay away from WoW too, I'm sure a similar result would occur. RuneScape was free which was nice, but I don't think the design and content is as advanced or elaborate as WoW. Similar to Wow, RuneScape was primarily quest based, but also allowed users to venture off and kill one another as well as just bum around chit chatting and level boosting (I remember I was always a big fan of the mining skill).
I think quest-based communities online are pretty cool, its not just a bunch of annoying teenagers killing each other and whining/gloating about it. Lately, I've found online console games to be just that, and its been frustrating. When I think of MMORPGs, and particularly the quest aspect of them, I think of a more mature user base than on consoles. However, I know this isn't always the case, as proved in lecture with the 'Leroy Jenkins' clip. Haha..
