I will be presenting tomorrow afternoon in our scheduled discussion time and wanted to give everyone a heads up on some of the questions I will be asking at the end so you can brainstorm answers or possibly comment on my blog. 1) How many of you have participated in an online community? Second Life specifically? 2) Any thoughts on making online communities your "alternative ego" giving users the power/ability to be whoever they want... 3) Anyone want to join the Second Life community now? 4) What are other online communities like Second Life?
After only being a member of Second Life for four and a half weeks now I still have lots to learn, as I say every time. Now that I put together all my information for my presentation tomorrow I will start to use the internet to help me out. I will slowly be looking up different things you can do on Second Life And try them out and will of course report back to the blog on how they work out. If anyone has any suggestions on what to try out please let me know, I am really excited to see what this online community will allow me to do.
After learning about Third Spaces today I realized that many people use these communities or spaces as stress relievers. Whereas people might have taken a walk around the lake everyday or go to the same coffee shop every morning as a way to escape their daily grind, relax, and de-stress. However, sometimes I think that online communities create more stress for people and give them anxiety. For instance, after going on Facebook, people may have increased anxiety because they saw certain pictures or saw a post on someone's wall. In short, my question is: do these online communities really create an outlet for people or do they simply increase anxiety and take away from other activities like taking a walk that promotes health and well being?
