Blog Post #4 - Googling Yourself

After googling my name, Brian Oliver, I was relieved that the search results didn’t return anything having to do with me.  Most of the results featured two different basketball players named Brian Oliver.  One is currently a stand out basketball player for Georgia Tech, and the other played in the NBA for the Washington Bullets, but in college played for Georgia Tech as well.  I was surprised to find that the two weren’t related!  Soon, I began to think if I was on google at all.  I wanted to see, so I specified my search a little more and typed in “Brian Oliver Florida” because that is where I grew up, thinking there was maybe some information about me from high school sports.  However, there was nothing about me playing sports.     Most of the results talked about a sex offender named Brian Oliver who lives in Florida.  My name is associated with a sex offender!  What is worse? Having a future employer google your name and find a picture of you drinking in college, or finding a picture of a sex offender under your name?  What if they think that is me, or related to me even?  This actually disturbed me a little, and hopefully nobody searches Brian Oliver, and thinks I am a sex offender because of the results that they find.

Here’s a picture of the Brian Oliver sex offender, future employers don’t be fooled!
